Relationship

There are many things this post could be on, but what I want to focus on in this post is having a relationship with God.

If we look and study the bible the main thing that keeps cropping up is having relationship with God, we see this right through from Genesis to Revelation, from creation of humankind to the second coming of Christ and entering into Heaven. The bible as we know is split into two sections, effectively two covenants, the first in which we as people are given a set of guidelines to live our lives as without them we ultimately were tempted into doing things that have grave consequences for ourselves. So here we see God stepping in to try and protect us from ourselves by providing us with laws in which we are to be governed and look after ourselves as well as looking after the society we belonged to, namely the Jewish community.

The second part is the second covenant which is more universal and encompasses each person in the world no matter whether you were alive at the time of Jesus or not. This new covenant is one of greater significance than the first as by following it you not only fulfilled the first covenant by living within the law, but it also completely eradicated any eternal consequence of your wrong actions whilst here on earth. The reason this is so important is because of the relationship element that is so often talked about.

What is the relationship element? You may ask this question and indeed many relationships exist and are discussed in the bible, however the one that is most important and the relationship so sought after, which ultimately is the reason why we are here today, is the one between us and God. God had created a Heaven and angels, but the angels were beings automatically predisposed to loving and worshipping God, I guess it would be hard not to in Heaven surrounded by the love an glory of God, however as this appears to be a more programmed response rather one of choice God wanted someone different who would therefore choose to live life with Him and love Him.

So God created the earth and on it He put a man and a woman, we were given the gift of free will and able to choose what we do. Now God in terms of us doesn’t view Himself as a King and ruler over all, although He is King of Kings and there is none higher. This may only be His view of the world on a grand stage seen as we have many kingdoms and countries. But to the individual God is a Father, a parent who wants what any good parent wants… A relationship with their child and to see them grow and flourish. This is the individual goal of our creator God, why we talk of Him as Father God, it underlines that significance of relationship to us and it is this that He craves so much, more than anything else in the world.

A relationship with God then is the very thing we must crave towards, for what child is left hungry by a parent? What child is left cold and naked in the rain? I am aware sadly, that we do not all have good parents and so what may be said here and now may be strange or bitter for some of you reading this. All I can say is that God is different. To come to God is to come to life, love and hope. That is all He ever wants to have from us and to give us, to build an unbreakable bond that lasts a lifetime.

Have you ever stopped and watched children 1 or 2 years of age with their parents, they are will always start with their parents and then venture off once they feel safe but if anything is to happen that either interests them or scares them, they often share this with their parents pointing out the very thing. This is constant life and relationship in full swing… For a child who is loved and secure they will explore and adventure out into the world, they will come back to you to either show you what excites them or to tell you all about it later on. On the other hand, when they are wary of something and frightened, they will come rushing back to their parent for safety. God is no different than that parent, God will bring you to places that are good for you (usually fully clothed and well fed and well rested). God will make sure you are safe and then send you out into the world for you to explore and make the most of, but He will not leave He will be there waiting for you to include Him, but He is also there for reassurance if anything was to go wrong or you found yourself in a difficult situation. We are free to run back to God to get help, guidance or reassurance of safety. This is seen so many times with the Israelites in the Old Testament, who are described as Gods children.

The point here is that relationship with God is key in our lives, you cannot be a full Christian without it as it is at the very heart of our faith. Christianity is built on love and relationship and God demonstrates both in His covenants with us, particularly with the sacrifice of His Son Jesus. The least we can do is honour Him with a day to day relationship, a partnership through life that will one day carry on into our eternal lives when we are united with Him in Heaven.
